Taxonomy Identification: Family Lucanidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758

Colour: Black

Size: Body length excluding legs and antenna, 20-40mm.

Comments & Applications: Little brother to the much larger Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus) its common name “lesser” refers to the much smaller jaw size. These examples are home grown, captive bred in our garden tree stumps! Sexes are very similar, males have larger jaws with a knobbed appendage.
